Fix: “Can’t connect” / “Connection timed out”

A connection timeout usually means the server isn’t reachable from your network. That can be as simple as a typo, or as annoying as port forwarding and CGNAT.

Player checklist

  1. Double-check the server address (and port if present).
  2. Try again in 1–2 minutes (the server may be restarting after an update).
  3. Restart Minecraft and your launcher.
  4. Ask the server Discord if the server is currently online or in maintenance.

Server owner checklist

  • Confirm the server process is running and listening on the expected port (default is 25565).
  • If you host at home, set up port forwarding on your router and allow the port through your server firewall.
  • If port forwarding is correct but the port is still closed externally, your ISP may use CGNAT (common on some residential connections). In that case, port forwarding won’t work.

If you’re on CGNAT

Options include: requesting a public IPv4 from your ISP, using a hosting provider, using an IPv6-capable setup, or using a tunnel service.
